DID A STUDY REALLY PROVE THAT VEGETABLES REDUCE CANCER RISK BY 90% IN DOGS?

You may have seen the claim repeated countless times:

"Adding vegetables to your dog's diet reduces cancer risk by 90%."

It's an impressive statistic. The problem? That's not what the study actually showed. Here's what researchers really found:

  • The study examined Scottish Terriers, a breed genetically predisposed to Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC), a form of bladder cancer.
  • It was a retrospective observational study, meaning researchers looked back at feeding histories and compared dogs diagnosed with TCC to dogs without TCC.
  • Dogs receiving vegetables regularly were found to have lower odds of developing TCC.
  • The often-quoted "90% reduction" came from a subset analysis involving certain vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, not from all vegetables, all cancers, or all dogs.

Most importantly, the study found an association, not proof of cause and effect.

What the study did NOT show:

  • Vegetables prevent cancer.
  • Vegetables reduce all cancers by 90%.
  • The findings apply equally to every breed.
  • Dogs fed fresh food or raw diets receive the same degree of benefit.
  • A bowl of kibble becomes "anti-cancer" simply because vegetables were added.

This distinction matters.

The study population consisted largely of dogs consuming conventional diets. Researchers were evaluating whether supplemental vegetables were associated with lower odds of TCC within that population.

That does not tell us whether adding vegetables to an already fresh-food diet provides the same effect.

It also does not tell us whether dogs consuming a properly formulated prey-model raw diet, whole prey diet, or balanced fresh-food diet would experience any additional reduction in cancer risk.

Can vegetables provide beneficial phytonutrients? Absolutely.

Can this study be used as proof that vegetables prevent cancer in all dogs? No.

Good science requires us to follow the evidence where it leads, not where marketing, social media, or personal beliefs want it to go.

A study showing an association in one breed, one cancer type, and one dietary context should not be transformed into a universal nutrition rule for every dog.

As pet owners, we should be cautious of nutrition claims that sound too simple, too absolute, or too good to be true.

The conclusion is not that vegetables are magical. The conclusion is that nutrition research is often far more nuanced than the headlines suggest.
